10 rules for skiers

Written on : November 26, 2025Last updated on : November 26, 2025
10 essential rules for every good skier

On skis or snowboard… whatever your style, safety on the slopes is essential to fully enjoy your mountain stay.
Here are the 10 essential rules for every good skier, based on international resort safety principles.

Follow them every time you hit the slopes: they protect both you and others, making your skiing experience enjoyable for everyone.
These rules apply to beginners as well as experienced skiers.

1. Wear a helmet and proper equipment: the foundation of your safety

To reduce the risk of injury, equipment suited to your body, skill level, and the day’s conditions is essential. Proper gear improves control and decreases the risk of accidents on the slopes.

  • Choose a certified helmet to protect your head in case of a fall.

  • Consider wearing a back protector: it shields your spine in case of a fall or collision.

  • Have your skis or snowboard adjusted by a professional.

  • Check the bindings and condition of your equipment.

2. Warm up before skiing: a simple gesture that makes all the difference

A few minutes of warm-up can prevent muscle tension and injuries. Gentle stretching, joint mobilization, and light cardio exercises prepare your body and help you enjoy a full day of skiing safely.

3. Check the weather and snow conditions before heading out

Before hitting the slopes and skiing safely, make sure to check:

  • Weather conditions

  • Snow conditions

  • Avalanche risk

  • Open or closed runs

4. Adjust your speed according to your level and the slope

Controlled speed helps avoid collisions and ensures a better reaction in case of unexpected obstacles.
Adapt your speed based on:

  • Your technical skills

  • The difficulty of the slope

  • Slope traffic

  • Visibility

  • Snow conditions

This rule applies to all skiers and snowboarders:

  • Beginners: stay in learning areas and on green slopes.

  • Experienced: adjust your speed on blue and green runs.

5. Respect signs and never enter a closed slope

Mountain signage is there for your protection. Follow signs, danger warnings, closures, and marked zones.
A closed slope may hide unseen risks: ice patches, avalanche triggers, maintenance, or grooming machines.

6. Control your trajectory: priority is always given to the skier in front

Fundamental rule: the skier behind must pay attention to the one in front.
Everyone shares the responsibility to avoid collisions. Anticipate, look ahead, and adjust your path.

7. Be aware of your surroundings and other skiers

Before moving, restarting, or changing direction, always observe your environment. On the slopes, stay vigilant: a quick glance left, right, and behind can prevent accidents.

8. Respect everyone’s space

The ski area is shared. Keep a safe distance from other skiers and give enough room when overtaking.
Passing should be done without disturbing others and with sufficient safety margin.

9. Stop in visible and safe areas

Never stop in the middle of a slope, in a narrow section, or just after a drop. If you need to stop, move to the side in a clearly visible area to avoid collisions.

10. Alert in case of an accident: a crucial gesture

If you witness an incident, immediately notify the ski patrol.

Describe the situation, location, and condition of the injured person, and stay with them until help arrives.

Why follow the rules of a good skier?

Following these 10 rules:

  • Reduces the risk of accidents

  • Improves coexistence between beginners and experts

  • Allows you to fully enjoy the ski area safely

  • Preserves the experience for everyone (families, children, snowboarders, ski tourers…)

These rules are at the heart of mountain safety and allow everyone to enjoy a secure and pleasant skiing experience.
