Looking for a scenic walk in the heart of the Alps that’s easy to access, family-friendly and full of discoveries? The Chamois Trail at Les 2 Alpes is one of the must-do summer hikes in the resort.
At 2,400 metres above sea level, this fun and educational trail invites you to explore the spectacular landscapes of the Écrins National Park while learning more about local wildlife.
Easily reached via the Diable hybrid lift, the trail offers two loops options suited to different ability levels: Apprenti Cabri, perfect for families, and Maître Chamois, slightly more challenging but still accessible. A fully immersive nature experience — ideal for discovering the mountains in a different way.
The Chamois Trail is located high above the resort of Les 2 Alpes, at around 2,400 metres above the sea level. It starts right next to the Diable hybrid lift, in the heart of the high-altitude area, offering spectacular views from the very first steps over the Vénéon Valley and the surrounding peaks.
One of the major advantages of this hike is how easy it is to access. In summer, pedestrian access via the ski lifts allows you to reach the trailhead effortlessly. Once at the top, the walk begins directly from a landscaped area, following panoramic paths that blend seamlessly into the alpine environment.
The Chamois Trail was designed to make the mountains accessible, educational and enjoyable, without compromising on scenery.
Apprenti Cabri Loop: easy route, ideal for families with children and beginner hikers. Allow around 45 minutes.
Maître Chamois Loop: intermediate level, with slightly more elevation gain. Average duration: 45 minutes.
Apprenti Cabri: approx. 1.5 km
Maître Chamois: approx. 1.5 km
The trail is clearly marked, safe and well maintained, alternating between dirt paths, grassy sections and rocky areas. It is easy to walk in summer, even without prior mountain hiking experience.
This short, playful loop is ideal for a family outing or a first introduction to hiking at altitude. The trail crosses open areas with sweeping views over the Vénéon Valley.
Educational panels line the route, explaining the lifestyle of chamois, local flora and the balance of the alpine ecosystem. A fun and informative experience, enjoyed by both children and adults.
Slightly longer and more demanding, this loop is aimed at walkers comfortable on moderately difficult trails. It allows for deeper outdoor exploration and access to even more impressive viewpoints over the Alps and the Écrins National Park.
This is also the section where wildlife sightings are often the most rewarding, particularly in rocky areas favoured by chamois.
The Chamois Trail offers a rich variety of spectacular alpine scenery:
The Vénéon Valley, with its villages and dramatic mountain streams
Iconic peaks of the Oisans Alps
Open views of the Aiguille de Venosc
Preserved alpine nature, combining mountain pastures, cliffs and high-altitude meadows
Thanks to its diversity of viewpoints, this panoramic hike is perfect in summer, especially for photography enthusiasts.
To make the most of your walk:
Wear comfortable hiking shoes
Bring clothing suitable for altitude (warm layer, windbreaker)
Carry water, snacks and sun protection
Check the weather forecast before setting off: conditions can change quickly in the mountains
Respect wildlife and stay on marked trails
A camera or binoculars are also recommended to observe wildlife without disturbing it.
Yes, several amenities are available close to the trail:
Mountain restaurant and terrace near the Diable hybrid lift
Picnic areas at altitude
Toilets near the lift stations
Water points depending on the period
These facilities make the outing even more enjoyable and family-friendly.
Accessible, educational and spectacular, the Chamois Trail at Les 2 Alpes is a must-do nature experience for discovering the mountains in summer. Panoramic walking, wildlife observation, alpine landscapes and easy access — this hike truly ticks all the boxes for a successful day outdoors.
